I occasionally (or not so occasionally) get calls at home from parents of children I teach. It usually is not a "Hi, how are you" conversation. So when I see one of these numbers come across my screen, I start reflecting on what happened that day. Well, this happened last night. It actually turned out to be a really cute call. The parent said hesitantly, "Umm... my child told me I was supposed to call you." I was baffled. I did not tell him/her to have their parent call me. Then I remembered that I complimented the child several times during the day on their reading.
I then understood, that my student wanted me to share this with their parents. I thought this was so cute, and it made me feel so thankful that I am in a position that I can make children feel good about themselves. Most of the time, I only get feedback from parents who are less than happy so it was refreshing to have a phone call like this. It made me realize, that all of us need praising. As a teacher, maybe I needed this.
I got a note from a parent last week that about made me cry. It is these moments that get me through the stressful times, the times when I feel anything but appreciated.
